A prayer for a different path

Excuse me while I pray-

We confess, oh God, that despite our advocacy for love we are yet struggling with the vesitages of ancient hatreds and prejudices that yet reside in our hearts because of historical harms, present indignities, and deep mistrust.

We desire to forgive, to accept and to celebrate others as our siblings but such actions seem unsafe and are scary. So much harm has come by the hands of our fellow human beings that it seems wise to anticipate harm, hold onto anger, and demonize anyone who is not of our tribe and therefore do not share the same interest in winning power and control as we do.

We need you oh God! Not just the concept of “God” but the reality of your presence. More than ever, we cry out for the incarnational, relational and at times inexplicable presence of Emmanuel!

If we are to work together and lay aside our pain, trauma, and unpaid debts of horrible atrocities we are going to need more than a political solution. We will need a spiritual healing and psychological adjustment. Our therapists, religious and spiritual leaders are helpful but they aren't enough!

That is why we worship, meditate and pray - to open up ourselves to a deminsion of awe and mystery! Beyond our intellect, our emotions and our religion there - there you are!

We seek to be changed and cleansed by the revelation of reality that justice and righteousness are not wholely dependant upon human beings acting right! In order for us to turn towards the future we need to know that you have our backs!

We seek to know within our deepest parts that what we do not understand does make sense. We seek the freedom to act with courage, even when we are scared. We seek to move in faith, even when we are discouraged by what we see! We seek to forgive even when we feel that we have been wronged. We seek a life changing experience with God that will change us and (through us and despite us) change the world!

Breathlessly, relentlessly and desperately we seek you, oh God the creator and substainer of the universe! Amen
